Floodplain/Flood Hazard Areas

Identified 100-year (.1) and 500 year (.05) Flood Hazard Areas in Mason County are on the following bodies of water:

• Lake Michigan, Bass Lake, Hamlin Lake, Lincoln Lake, Pere Marquette Lake 
• Pere Marquette River, South Branch of the Pere Marquette River

Non-mapped areas subject to the State of Michigan Part 451 of the Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Act, 1994 also include the Sable River and Lincoln River.

Building in a Floodplain?

The County Building Department requires a survey to determine Base Flood Elevation (BFE) and additional building requirements to ensure compliance with ASCE 24-05 pertaining to Flood Resistant Design and Contsutruction.  A National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP)  Elevation Certificate will be required at the end of the project.  If you are a contractor or a homeowner and are working within the 100-year floodplain you must hire a qualified design professional to assist with surveying, design and construction, and/or the use of fill.
